A Long History of American Studies Programs
at the Salzburg Global Seminar

When the Salzburg Global Seminar first began, in 1947, it was called "The Salzburg Seminar in American Studies". Although the times have changed, and the Salzburg Global Seminar's pallette of programs evolved into international and multi-disciplinary offerings... the tradition of American Studies should not be neglected.

The Salzburg Seminar American Studies Association (SSASA) was founded in 2003 to build upon the positive momentum stemming from thirty-two sessions organized by the American Studies Center between 1994 and 2002. The purpose of SSASA is to provide a forum for anyone working in the field of American Studies to interact with experts in the field by meeting annually at Schloss Leopoldskron to attend symposia devoted to broad American Studies themes. The annual symposia are attended by distinguished professionals from a wide number of countries around the world. Through such American Studies symposia, the Salzburg Global Seminar continues to make a vital contribution to the promotion of open, international dialogue.

The 2013 symposium entitled “Sustainability and the City: America and the Urban World” will take place at Schloss Leopoldskron from 26 to 30 September, 2013. It will focus on the social, economic, and political role that cities play in the lives of their inhabitants, their culture and the world. It will draw on a range of disciplines to examine the future of the city in America, but will also target cities around the world. The focus will be on common issues, inter-related relationships and future trends, as participants examine the dynamics that constitute the social and cultural dimensions of the modern global city.

For any questions, contact the symposium director, Ms. Marty Gecek, mgecek@SalzburgGlobal.org

Below, you will find links to several web pages which were created as part of previous American Studies programs. Even back in the 90's, the participants were using the latest in technologies, to present their ideas, collaborations, and findings, on the Web. While this is not an all inclusive listing, we have done our best to gather together as many of these pages as possible. Please be aware that given the fact that most of these projects were created well over a decade ago... it is possible that some of the links may be broken or unavailable.
