Biography:
Matthew Karnitschnig is the European economics editor and Germany Bureau chief for The Wall Street Journal. Based in Berlin, Mr. Karnitschnig oversees the Journal's coverage of the European debt crisis, the ECB and the euro-zone economy. Previously, he was a staff reporter in the New York bureau of the Journal, concentrating on finance, mergers and acquisitions and the media industry and was one of the lead reporters covering the 2008 financial crisis. He was also a staff reporter in The Wall Street Journal's Germany bureau, where he covered that country's economy and major companies from 2002 to 2005. From 2000 until 2002, he was the paper's correspondent in Vienna, covering Central and Eastern Europe. Prior to joining the Journal, he worked as a correspondent for BusinessWeek in Germany. He has also worked for Bloomberg News and Reuters. He received a B.A. from Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia and an M.A. from Columbia University.
