Paul Burstow was appointed as a health minister in the UK Coalition Government in 2010. He was responsible for writing the Government’s mental health strategy, No health without mental health, which promoted the idea of parity of esteem between mental and physical health. As minister for children’s mental health he worked with Professor Peter Fonagy on the development and roll out of a children and young people’s program improving access to psychological therapies program, which started in 2011. In 2013 he was awarded the President’s Medal by the Royal College of Psychiatrists for his championing of mental health. After leaving the government in 2012 he worked with the think tank Centre Forum to establish the Commission on Mental Health which reported in the summer of 2014. He has represented the constituency of Sutton and Cheam in South West London since 1997 and was appointed to the Privy Council in 2012.
