Alabama State Senate

Henry “Hank” Sanders is an elected member of the Alabama State Senate where he focuses particularly on issues pertaining to education, children, health, women, and taxation. He serves as chairman of the Finance and Taxation Committee, which handles the $4.1 billion education budget. Senator Sanders has founded numerous organizations including the Alabama New South Coalition, of which he is president; the 21st Century Youth Leadership Movement, with chapters across America and Africa; and the Black Belt Human Resources Center. In 1971, he began Chestnut, Sanders, Sanders, Pettaway, and Campbell, P.C., the largest black law firm in Alabama. His law practice has been one of service, helping poor and black people save their land, protecting citizens’ constitutional rights, and building strong sensitive governmental institutions. Senator Sanders served as president of the Harvard Black Law Students Association. He received his law degree from Harvard Law School, and was awarded a Ford Foundation Fellowship for research in Africa.
