James Appleton is president of the University of Redlands, California. He previously served for fifteen years as a member of the faculty, vice president for student affairs and later as vice president for development at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. He has also held various faculty and administrative positions at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. Dr. Appleton was recently elected to the Board of Directors of Redlands Centennial Bank, is serving a three-year term as chair of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities, and was for many years on the executive committee of the board of the Washington-based National Association of Independent Colleges and Universities and the President’s Council of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. Dr. Appleton holds an A.B. in social sciences from Wheaton College, Illinois and a Ph.D. in higher education administration from Michigan State University.
