Bertel Haarder is the Danish minister for refugees, immigration, and integration, a post he has held since 2001. From 2001 to 2002, during the Danish presidency of the European Union, Mr. Haarder served as the Danish minister for European Affairs. From 1994 to 2001 he was a member of the European Parliament (EP), and served as vice president of the Parliament from 1997 to 1999. During his tenure in the EP, Mr. Haarder also served as a member of the Committee on Citizen's Freedoms and Rights, Justice and Home Affairs from 1994 to 2001; chairman of the Venstre Group; vice president of the Liberal Group in the Parliament from 1999 to 2001; a member of the Committee on Institutional Affairs and the Subcommittee on Human Rights from 1994 to 1999; and as the president of the European Union-Japan Delegation from 1994 to 1997. He is the former Danish minister for education and research, and served as a member of the Danish Parliament (Folketinget) from 1975 to 1998. Mr. Haarder received a B.A. from Wesleyan University in Connecticut, USA, and a M.A. from Aarhus University.
