Biography:
C.O. PANNENBORG is senior advisor for health, nutrition and population at the World Bank in Washington, DC. He is the World Bank’s most senior technical health professional. He has worked for WHO, and NGOs in Latin America and Asia. Dr. Pannenborg was an honorary professor of social medicine and epidemiology and has published extensively on international health, epidemiology and tropical medicine. After several years as director for strategic policy at the Ministry of Health and as population and health advisor at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in The Hague, Netherlands, he joined the World Bank in 1986. Within the Bank he worked first on health, nutrition and population (HNP) operations in the Asia region and subsequently on HNP in the Africa region. Following several years as division chief, he became the sector leader for the Africa region, and then the Bank’s senior advisor forHNP. Dr. Pannenborg is the principal member of the Bank’s overall sector board for health, nutrition and population, where he oversees the Bank’s worldwide activities in malaria and other communicable diseases, as well as the Bank’s involvement in medical and health research, and in pharmaceuticals. Professor Pannenborg received his degrees in civil and international law, as well as in tropical medicine and public health.
