Biography:
Marcia WESTPHAL is professor at the School of Public Health at the University of São Paulo in Brazil. In this capacaity she is responsible for graduate and undergraduate disciplines in health promotion and social participation, including evaluation of health promotion programs. She also serves as an advisor on international cooperation at the International Cooperation Board of the University of São Paulo. Professor Westphal specializes in health promotion and health education, and is involved in the social and economic determinants of health on healthy cities projects. She is the former associate dean of the School of Public Health at the University of São Paulo. She is also a former W.K. Kellogg Fellow in health education; was a scientific consultant for the World Health Organization (WHO); and was the vice president for Latin America of the International Union for Health Promotion and Education. She received her M.D. and M.P.H. at the School of Public Health at the University of São Paulo. Professor Westphal received her doctorate degree at the Center for Health Promotion Research and Development at the University of Texas, USA. She is an alumna of Salzburg Seminar Session 391, The Social and Economic Determinants of the Public’s Health, 2001.
