The Future of Banking: Is There a Sustainable Business Model for Banks?

Students at the Margins and the Institutions that Serve Them:
A Global Perspective

Abstract:
2014 marks the centenary year of the outbreak of World War One and the bicentenary year of the opening of the Congress of Vienna - two dates that profoundly shaped the course of our history. While in 1814, at the end of the Napoleonic Wars, the concerted powers of Europe were architects of a new international system, the leaders of 1914 have famously been described as sleepwalkers, stumbling into war.

Looking back at these two pivotal periods in history raises striking parallels with how today's leaders are trying to cope with contemporary challenges. In a global system under stress, can the international system adapt, or will it collapse? What will future historians say of the leaders of 2014: are we architects or sleepwalkers?

To look back at the significance of 1814 and 1914, and to learn key lessons from history, the International Peace Institute (IPI) and Salzburg Global Seminar will bring together established and rising leaders from the worlds of politics, diplomacy, and the military, together with historians, journalists, political scientists, philosophers, and writers for a unique global conversation.

The format of the symposium will combine brief expert keynote addresses with intensive interactive discussions and a stimulating social program, including literary talks, concerts, and art exhibitions.

In the lead-up to the symposium, two or more round-table discussions on specific topical issues will be held in strategic cities that still carry the traces of past conflicts.
