Preserve and enhance our historic home – Schloss Leopoldskron – as a place of openness, trust and inspiration.
From Oscar-winning movies to peace agreements, celebrated novels to radical new thinking, Schloss Leopoldskron has inspired many people to do great things. In 2014, this 18th-century palace was transformed to become Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron, a premier 21st-century hotel. The Hotel’s revenue supports both the work of Salzburg Global Seminar and our stewardship of this Austrian national monument.
Through Inspiring Leadership: The Campaign for Salzburg Global Seminar, we will preserve the historic qualities of Schloss Leopoldskron by investing in the following:
SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON’S NEW “COLLABORATIVE LEADERSHIP WING”
THE RENOVATION OF SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON’S 3RD FLOOR
$1,250,000
Salzburg Global Seminar was founded in 1947 in response to global crisis. We are now at a new moment of convergent crises that if unaddressed will have a massive impact on quality of life now and far into the future.
As Salzburg Global celebrates its 75th anniversary, we are renovating the southwest corner of the 3rd floor of Schloss Leopoldskron – an extraordinary space of 250m2 that features remarkable views of the alps and the lake in front of Schloss Leopoldskron. The southwest corner wing is among the most beautiful areas of this unique rococo palace and national historic monument, and has not been renovated since the 1960s.
We will dedicate this new wing to those working to reimagine and redesign systems through the kinds of
collaborative leadership needed to meet the challenge.
Through a contribution of $1,250,000, Salzburg Global will develop a new “Collaborative Leadership Wing” on the 3rd floor of Schloss Leopoldskron. This investment will enable Salzburg Global to host programs, program partners, and special guests; provide long-stay residencies for Fellows piloting new ideas and projects; and develop new residency programs focused on collaborative leadership and ethics.
The Collaborative Leadership Wing will include:

RESTORING THE HISTORIC HEART OF SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON:
RENOVATION OF THE FIRST FLOOR STATE ROOMS
$600,000
The first floor of Schloss Leopoldskron contains some of its most iconic and important rooms. With its seamless mix of original Baroque architecture and design transformations implemented by Max Reinhardt, Schloss Leopoldskron’s first floor is its historic and contemporary heart. For the more than 25,000 people that visit Schloss Leopoldskron each year – as Fellows of Salzburg Global and guests of Hotel Schloss Leopoldskron – the iconic Baroque and Reinhardt-inspired rooms are a source of inspiration and a
home away from home.
Over the last five years, we have completed several restoration projects on the first floor, including the “Chinese Room” and the “Red Salon”, both adjacent to the Max Reinhardt Library.
This investment will support the next phase of the first-floor restoration, and will include:

MAX REINHARDT’S LIBRARY:
A CENTENNIAL RESTORATION AND DOCUMENTARY PROJECT
$450,000
Schloss Leopoldskron, Reinhardt’s home from 1918-1938, was critical to the founding of both the Salzburg Festival and Salzburg Global Seminar. It was, in fact, Schloss Leopoldskron that inspired Reinhardt’s dedication to building a “festival of peace” by bridging cultures through music, performance, and the arts.
When he purchased the Schloss in 1918, Reinhardt saw Leopoldskron’s potential as a place for reflection,
restoration, and renewal after a devastating global conflict. He set out to reimagine the building’s interiors and regularly gathered the world’s most innovative artists, playwrights, and cultural icons of the day.
The Max Reinhardt Library is the crown jewel of Schloss Leopoldskron. Installed in 1927 by Max Reinhardt, the library is a replica of the Monastery Library in St. Gallen, Switzerland. Max Reinhardt designed many of the features in the library himself and the library was his most cherished space in Schloss Leopoldskron. It includes a private “hidden” staircase, which leads directly to Max Reinhardt’s private residence, now the Max Reinhardt Suite. Each of the ornately decorated doors (wood and brass) feature Max Reinhardt’s monogram, as well as the Star of David.
The Max Reinhardt Library has not been renovated since 1926-1927 when it was first installed.
This $450,000 centennial investment will make critical restorations to:
In addition to the costs of the renovation, this investment will support the cost to produce a centennial documentary about Max Reinhardt’s Library, including how both Reinhardt’s books and the Jewish symbols in each of the library’s doors survived the Nazi Occupation of Schloss Leopoldskron from 1938-1945. The story of Max Reinhardt’s library and his books represent an extraordinary tale that history has not yet told.
This one-of-a-kind historic and centennial project will restore Max Reinhardt’s for the next 100 years and will bring the incredible story of Max Reinhardt’s library and his personal collection back to life.
THE WHITE ROOM
$150,000
Schloss Leopoldskron’s White Room is among the most beautiful of its State Rooms, located on the southwest corner of Schloss Leopoldskron’s first floor.
Referred to as the “most beautiful of Schloss Leopoldskron’s many beautiful rooms” by Karl Lagerfeld and his Chanel Team, the White Room is a hidden gem of Schloss Leopoldskron and represents a unique opportunity to bring a previously underutilized and under-appreciated historic room back to life.
For decades, this unique room, previously referred to as the “Porcelain Room”, has been a “back of house” room used for staff meals and staging for events.
Through an investment of $150,000, this project will:
