War. Genocide. Famine. Climate change. Pandemics. Inequality. Financial collapse. For all the progress and prosperity that the world has seen since 1947, we face evermore complex challenges in a rapidly changing world. Salzburg Global connects people and institutions with a passion for tackling tough problems, finding innovative solutions, and ultimately shaping a better world.

The work starts in Salzburg, but it doesn’t end here.

Our programs have long inspired participants to initiate bold new projects upon their return home. Working with carefully selected partners, we now embed in every program the opportunity to discuss and design downstream solutions. With the help of new micro-grants, collaboration among Fellows and partner institutions will produce initiatives ranging from grassroots projects to high-level policy proposals.

Through Inspiring Leadership: The Campaign for Salzburg Global Seminar, we will invest in the following:

SALZBURG GLOBAL EDUCATION LEADERSHIP CENTER

Education systems around the world need to adapt to the challenges facing 21st century societies, particularly in a post-pandemic context. Salzburg Global’s Education portfolio is already supporting individuals, institutions and education systems around the world to prepare and respond to these challenges and helping define and advance the skills and policies that education systems will need to thrive in the 21st century.

Salzburg Global’s new Education Leadership Center will build on our existing portfolio of education programs and incubate a new generation of programs through innovation and expansion. The expansion of the Education portfolio into an Education Center will draw on our existing work and will focus on several new approaches and investments that will enable us to expand our influence on education institutions, and the systems in which they operate.

Current Education Portfolio:

  1. Global Strategic Investing: The Center will continue to convene one or more annual in-person programs focused on global collaboration and influencing the future off education systems. Our Education for Tomorrow’s World series is now moving into its second decade and will continue to inform new approaches to learning, skills, and inclusion for radically different societies through our global and interdisciplinary programs.
  2. Network Development and Support: Since 2019 we have significantly increased our work with and support for purpose driven education networks. In 2021-22, through the support from several foundation partners, we have established a new global education policymakers network, a network focused on whole child development in education in displacement, and an education leadership network.

Additional Investments Needed:

  1. Endowed Education Center Director: To realize the full potential of our education programs and create anew Education Center, we will need a committed and funded Director position to oversee its expansion. We will therefore seek funds specifically to create a 7-year terrm- endowed Education Center Director position, which will oversee and grow our Education program and portfolio through 2028. ($500,000)
  2. Education Incubation and Innovation: An effective Education Center will need to focus on incubating new ideas and leveraging innovations from our existing education programs. To encourage this, we will offer small residential programs for select education innovators who will work together at Schloss Leopoldskron over the course of 1-2 weeks and partner with us to move new thinking forward and to identify and solicit new partners and supporters. (2022-2025 $200,000)
  3. Research Partner and Residencies: To expand our visibility and engagement with partners, our Education Center will need to strengthen intellectual and substantive products and outputs. We will therefore offer resident fellowship and residencies to academics and other Salzburg Global Fellows whose work can advance our programs on whole child development and education and social justice. We will also partner with NGOs and academics to identify and publicize important areas of new research. (2022-2024 $200,000)
  4. Publications and Communications: Our Education Center will focus on publishing new e-books and reports in collaboration with Salzburg Global Fellow and will expand our existing relationships with publishing and distribution partners. ($100,000)
  5. Public Events and Annual Lectures: To increase the visibility and influence of the Education Center, we will expand our partnerships on larger scale public events and conferences. We will also start a new annual online and in person Education Center Lecture series, which will delivered annually by a Salzburg Global Fellow. (2022-2024: $100,000)

With an investment of $1,100,000, our education program will increase its size and impact and will support the effective development and implementation of key reforms for post-pandemic education systems as well as securing Salzburg Global Seminar’s place at the cutting edge of education leadership and reform.

CUTLER CENTER FOR THE RULE OF LAW

The rule of law is fundamental for effective public institutions and the protection of individuals across
societies. It informs relations between individuals and states and is vital to the sustainability of an international rules-based order.
Salzburg Global Seminar has addressed democratic institutions and the rule of law since 1947. In 2010, it founded the Lloyd N. Cutler Center for the Rule of Law to consolidate and make more visible our work in this vital field.

An investment of $1,000,000 in the Cutler Center for the Rule of Law will:

  1. Increase the Cutler Center permanent endowment to $1 million through an addition of $600,000. The Cutler Center Endowment will in part support two existing annual programs and pilot a third to make the Center’s work more truly international:
    1. The Cutler Lecture, usually held at the Supreme Court of the United States with a distinguished speaker addressing a vital issue of international law and public policy; and
    2. The Cutler Fellows Program, a leadership development program for extraordinary students at the top 14 law schools in the United States catalyzing interest in international law and public service.
    3. The Salzburg Global Rising Lawyers Network will connect the Cutler Fellows alumni (currently ~500 in 25 countries) with global counterparts to accelerate their professional growth, deepen understanding of transnational legal issues, and to collaborate on preserving democratic institutions and a rules-based international order. The Rising Lawyers Network will support peer-to-peer exchange, access to experiential learning workshops, and opportunities to collaborate on sustaining democratic institutions and rules-based multilateral institutions.
  2. Endow a new Cutler Center Director position for 5-years (through 2026) to define and manage our Rule of Law program portfolio and the activities of the Lloyd N. Cutler Center for the Rule of Law. ($400,000)
